In June of 2024, former U.S. Congresswoman, Jackie Speier, conducted a "Working Discussion" with local women to brainstorm solutions to the rampant poverty of women and children in San Mateo County. Attendees spanned various sectors including government, philanthropy, tech, and non-profit. Also in attendance were local undergraduate student volunteers who helped organize and execute the event.
The attendees were split into rotating groups and held seminar-like discussions on how Rep. Speier can use her upcoming position on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors as well as her role in the Jackie Speier Foundation to prioritize the needs of women and children. Topics discussed included a wide range of issues related to affordable childcare, housing and eviction prevention, education, and mental health. The group brainstormed how to amplify and improve existing services available to low-income families and developed plans for new initiatives to fill gaps in services.
When asked about the purpose of the event, Rep. Speier said, "We wanted to bring together some of our county’s most talented and accomplished women to brainstorm an inclusive, engaged, and community-oriented culture for San Mateo County. They are ready to work and end the rampant inequality that exists here in our backyards." This gathering was the first of many future collaborations between San Mateo County women who want to level the playing field for women from all backgrounds and walks of life.
